The Hayakawa family has opened an eel skewer shop named "Hayakawa" in a newly established area on the outskirts of Tokyo. The eldest daughter, Kikuko, is married to a salaryman, Nakahara Isamu, from a local power company. The eldest son, Shigekichi, and the second daughter, Kumiko, help out at the shop. Kikuko and her husband relocated to Tokyo due to a job transfer. After struggling to find a rental apartment, they end up living with their colleague, Takemura, who has lost his wife.
