Soya (played by Kaho) grows up in Kimura, where the simple living environment is quite comfortable. The middle school Soya attends is a combined primary and junior high school, with only 6 students, but the children of various ages get along well. A transfer student from Tokyo, Hiroki Oosawa (played by Masaki Okada), breaks the tranquility of the village kids. Soya is warm towards this peer, but Hiroki is quite self-centered and difficult to get along with. In the summer, classmates swim together at the beach. There is a shortcut to the beach, but it's considered a supernatural place by the villagers; however, Oosawa insists on taking the shortcut. An accident occurs there, and Soya finds herself in trouble, but fortunately, Oosawa comes to her aid. Later, Soya learns that Oosawa is the grandson of her former neighbor and develops feelings for him. Their relationship, however, meets opposition from Soya's father, who reveals to her the past between him and Oosawa's mother. The two are immersed in the sweetness of first love, celebrating important holidays together, but the day of graduation eventually arrives.
