In 19th century Ireland, handsome and strong tenant farmer Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) faces the pain of losing his father. To avenge his father, this reckless young man is determined to kill the landlord Daniel Christie (Robert Prosky). Due to a twist of fate, he fails in his mission but encounters the landlord's beautiful daughter, Shannon (Nicole Kidman). Unlike her conservative parents, the expressive yet delicate and innocent Shannon yearns to leave her homeland and explore the world. By chance, Shannon and Joseph escape together and board a ship bound for America. However, their journey is fraught with misfortunes from the start, as Shannon's possessions are either stolen or deceived from her, leaving them with empty pockets. They temporarily stay in a run-down apartment managed by a Boston tycoon, where the proud Shannon lowers her pride to find work in a factory, while the strong Joseph earns a living through boxing. Throughout this process, they experience significant ups and downs in life, and gradually, the seeds of love are planted between them...
