The story takes place during the Muromachi period in Japanese history, a time that valued wisdom and reason. One of the hobbies of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (played by Higashiyama Noriyuki) is to engage in witty question-and-answer sessions with his many vassals for fun. Nishikawa Shin'emon (played by Narimiya Hiroki) is one of Yoshimitsu's retainers, and he is determined to set out to find the smartest person in the world for his lord.  In a chance encounter, Shin'emon learns of a child named Ikkyu (played by Suzuki Fuku) who is especially intelligent, so he goes to seek him out. After witnessing that the rumors are true, Shin'emon decides to take Ikkyu back to the court. Meanwhile, the owner of the Kikyō shop (played by Hiraizumi Seishin) and his daughter Miss Yayoi (played by Mirai Hoshika) inadvertently cause the only bridge leading from the village to the outside world to be inaccessible. A girl named Yoko (played by Kobayashi Seiran) seeks out Ikkyu, hoping that his wisdom can help the villagers solve this dilemma.
