General Feversham's son, Harry, only liked poetry in his childhood and, fearing that it would tarnish the family reputation, had entrusted his friend Dr. Sutton to look after him. After the general's death, Harry requested to be relieved of his military duties, as the Anglo-Egyptian forces were about to engage in combat against the Sudanese. His companions considered him a coward and humiliated him by sending white feathers. However, the British forces faced difficulties in the Sudan, prompting Harry to travel to Egypt to request that a doctor change his appearance to that of a local native. He infiltrated the front lines, but his original regiment was defeated by the rebels, with companions either killed or captured. Harry rescued his friend Captain Durrance to return to the British lines but was captured in the process. He soon escaped from prison to rescue his companions at Khartoum. When the British army finally arrived at Khartoum, Harry instigated a prison riot, taking control of part of the city wall. The British forces recaptured Khartoum, and Harry became a great hero.
