The story takes place in the suburbs of Burrows, Indiana, where Don (played by Fredric March) and his wife Elena (played by Martha Scott) live happily, raising their daughter Cindy (played by Mary Murphy) and son Raphael (played by Richard Eyer) together. One day, after Elena sends her husband and children out, a group of escaped convicts led by Green (played by Humphrey Bogart) and his brother Hall (played by Dewey Martin) breaks into their home. Later, Green, like a spider inviting prey into its web, takes control of the other three in the house. Their demand is simple: to wait for Green's mistress to bring them money. In fact, the police are already in pursuit of these fugitives, but they are unaware that the criminals are right under their noses.
