The pain of being abandoned by his wife has plunged police officer Frank (Al Pacino) into a bottomless abyss of suffering, where only nicotine and alcohol can offer him salvation. The occurrence of a murder case shatters the peace of the city, and Frank, along with his partner Sherman (John Goodman), is assigned to the case. Through various investigations, Frank discovers that the killer is a woman who seeks her prey through personal ads in the newspaper and cruelly murders them afterward. In order to pursue the killer, Frank forges his identity and places an ad in the newspaper, leading to the appearance of a woman named Helen (Ellen Barkin). Almost all evidence points to Helen as the true culprit of the case, but at this moment, Frank finds himself developing a dependency and feelings for Helen, while danger quietly approaches him.
