In order to write a book about serial killers, yuppie writer Brian Kessler (played by David Duchovny) and his photographer girlfriend Carly (played by Michelle Forbes) plan to travel to California and retrace America's famous killer routes. During the journey, Brian picks up a young couple, Eddie (played by Brad Pitt) and Alice (played by Juliette Lewis), to share the expensive gas costs, while Carly remains skeptical of the messy and lazy young pair. As the journey unfolds, the observant Carly discovers through various clues that the young couple may not be as simple as they appear; they seem to hide some unknown secrets. Unbeknownst to the two who are closely following the steps of the killer, the real killer is lurking right beside them...
