Based on the book of the same name by Glenn Stout, Jeff Nathanson (writer of "The Lion King," "The Terminal," "Catch Me If You Can") wrote the screenplay, focusing on Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel in history. Ederle’s father was a German butcher from Manhattan, and she was an excellent swimmer who won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics, which inspired her to attempt the English Channel crossing. In 1926, at the age of 20, Ederle swam 21 miles and successfully completed this feat, which had only been achieved by five men before her.
