Years after Oda Nobunaga was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide, Rikyū became the tea master for Nobunaga's successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Through the charm of tea, Rikyū won over the country's warlords and indulged in luxury, creating the highest residence of the tea ceremony, the Daitaku-ji in Kyoto, which served as the villa for the monk in charge of serving Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He built a world of his own. However, the dream was short-lived. As Ishida Mitsunari's power grew, conflicts began to arise between Hideyoshi and Rikyū. Initially, Rikyū's beloved disciple, Sōji, was expelled from the villa and killed for offending Hideyoshi. Then, Ishida Mitsunari slandered Rikyū to Hideyoshi, claiming that Rikyū was skeptical about the military campaign to Korea. Coincidentally, at that moment, Rikyū met Hideyoshi in the tea room and inadvertently spoke of the military expedition to Korea, further angering Hideyoshi. Eventually, Hideyoshi issued an order for Rikyū to leave Kyoto and confined him to the large courtyard. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife, Kita no Mandokoro, wrote a letter to Rikyū's wife, Riki, saying that if Rikyū would acknowledge his mistakes, she wanted to plead with Hideyoshi for his forgiveness. However, Riki's reply only expressed solemn gratitude without mentioning anything else. Seeing this letter made Hideyoshi even more furious, and he ordered Rikyū to commit seppuku as an apology.
