The story takes place during a hot summer, where Arnold (played by Kévin Azaïs) helps out at his father's woodworking shop during his free time. During a recruitment campaign, Arnold encounters a girl named Madeleine (played by Adèle Haenel). Unlike any girl he has known, Madeleine is strong, free-spirited, and has a presence that commands respect. She is passionate about exercising and building her physique because she firmly believes that the end of the world is approaching. Madeleine's unique qualities deeply attract Arnold's attention, and through her, he sees qualities he longs for but lacks. Under her influence, Arnold signs up for a ten-day army training camp with her.
