In early 20th-century Japan, Nagai Yasuke (played by Yusaku Matsuda), a graduate of the Tokyo Imperial University, comes from a wealthy family and is free from financial worries. He spends his days indulging in leisure and lives a relaxed, carefree life as an upper-class idle person. In stark contrast, his longtime friend Hiraoka Tōjirō (played by Kaoru Kobayashi) struggles financially; his wife Michiyo (played by Miwako Fujitani) suffers from a heart condition during her pregnancy, and their unborn child sadly dies. Under immense pressure, Hiraoka gives in to despair and frequents the entertainment districts. Their financial difficulties worsen, and the couple's relationship deteriorates. Michiyo is the sister of their deceased college friend Suganuma (played by Toshiro Kase), and throughout the years, the still-single Nagai harbors deep affection for Michiyo. He sympathizes with her situation, but due to moral constraints, he can only lock his passionate feelings deep within his heart. Unrequited love leaves countless heartaches unresolved...This film is adapted from Natsume Sōseki's novel of the same name.
