Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance) is a steadfast optimist. At 46, he is a crane operator and a former comic stunt diver who accidentally qualified for the 1976 British Open qualifiers. He has never played a game of golf in his life and ultimately scored a record 121, leading to a ban from the tournament committee. Maurice did not give up; he repeatedly gained entry by playing a cat-and-mouse game and using increasingly ridiculous pseudonyms to disguise himself. His antics troubled the authorities, while he became a folk hero—a brave and beloved underdog in the world of sports.
