In the 34th year of the Meiji era (1901), the international situation was tumultuous, with the Russo-Japanese War imminent. To cope with the harsh conditions of warfare in a frigid environment, the Japanese Army's high command decided to conduct a military exercise and chose the steep and icy Hakkoda Mountains as the location. The exercise team was divided into two groups, led by Captain Tokushima of the 31st Company from Hirosaki (played by Ken Takakura) and Captain Kanda of the 5th Company from Aomori (played by Kinya Kitaoji). Tokushima had extensive experience in marching across snowy fields, and he and Kanda carefully studied the marching route, agreeing to meet at the destination. However, Kanda’s superior, Major Yamada (played by Rentaro Mikuni), was solely focused on defeating his own troops; he not only unilaterally increased the number of troops but also brazenly disrupted the established plan. His stubbornness led the 5th Company down a path to destruction... This film is adapted from Jiro Nitta's novel "The Hakkoda Mountains: The Death's Wandering."
