The story takes place in Germany in 1946, just after World War II has ended. The land is scarred by war, and families are torn apart. Handsome Colonel Lewis (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Keira Knightley) have lost their eldest son in the war, causing Rachel to harbor a deep hatred for Germans. However, what she did not expect was that after the war, she and her remaining family would have to live under the same roof as a man named Stephan (Alexander Skarsgård). Stephan has also lost his wife in the war, which leads him to show little warmth towards Rachel, and the two are constantly at odds. The pain of losing their son drives Lewis to focus most of his time and energy on work, leaving Rachel to interact only with Stephan daily. Gradually, their relationship begins to change.
