This film is the third installment of Truffaut's famous "Antoine series," but film fans often overlook the short film "Antoine et Colette" and misidentify it as the second part. 23-year-old Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud) escapes from the army, and although he narrowly avoids punishment, he ends up in prison for assaulting a police officer. His criminal record hinders his job search, leading him to work as a hotel doorman, private detective, and other odd jobs. During this time, Antoine reconnects with his former girlfriend Christine. Their relationship is ambiguous and uncertain. While following a client's request to infiltrate a shoe store and spy on its charming owner, he becomes infatuated with her, causing his affections to waver between the two women.
