Ned Racine (William Hurt) is a slick, incompetent, and lecherous lawyer from Florida. At a concert, Ned encounters the married socialite Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner). Their extramarital affair drives Ned increasingly mad, and he eventually decides to eliminate Matty's husband, tycoon Edmund Walker (Richard Crenna), to help Matty inherit the fortune and flee with him. After the murder occurs, Ned's friend, prosecutor Peter (Ted Danson), and detective Oscar (J.A. Preston) both oppose Ned's continued relationship with Matty while having to investigate the death of Edmund Walker. The situation becomes increasingly beyond Ned's expectations; can he truly trust Matty? The film received Golden Globe nominations for Best New Star (Kathleen Turner) and British Academy Film Awards nominations for Best Newcomer (Kathleen Turner).
