This film is adapted from the 1994 novel of the same name by New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen. After graduating from Harvard University, Ellen Golden (played by Renée Zellweger) works for a magazine in New York, experiencing a rising career. However, she must put her job on hold to return to the small town of Longhollow, Pennsylvania, to care for her mother Kate (played by Meryl Streep), who is suffering from cancer. Ellen has always admired her father George (played by William Hurt), a scholar of American literature, but looks down on her mother, a housewife. While taking care of her mother, Ellen discovers the hardships of her mother’s life and various dark secrets about her father. Amidst the tumult of family dynamics, Ellen finally comes to understand her parents for the first time and finds the most genuine emotions in her life. The film was nominated for the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Satellite Award for Best Actress (Meryl Streep) and received a nomination for Best Sound Editing from the Motion Picture Sound Editors.
