A film adaptation of the novel by Tomoyoshi Murayama, which depicts the famous thief Ishikawa Goemon as a lower-ranking ninja who rebels against power. Directed by the social realist master Sadao Yamamoto, it showcases realistic and grand action while portraying the cries of rebellion of lower-ranking ninjas who have no choice but to live as tools of power, opening new horizons for the jidaigeki (period drama) film genre. In the late Sengoku period, Oda Nobunaga, burning with ambition for national domination, begins to purge religious factions such as Enryakuji and Ishiyama Honganji. In Iga Province, the lower-ranking ninja Ishikawa Goemon, under the command of Momochi Sandayu, boasts exceptional skills and is respected by his peers. The ninjas, inheritors of the Tendai and Shingon sects, receive a secret mission to assassinate Nobunaga, but for some reason, Goemon is left out... Yunosuke Ito's powerful performance as Sandayu is a highlight.
