The story takes place in the summer of 1941, when Pavet (Montgomery Clift) has just been transferred to a military camp in Hawaii. Company commander Homers (Philip Ober) sees Pavet's strong physique and invites him to join the army's boxing team. Unexpectedly, Pavet declines Homers' invitation, which angers and embarrasses Homers. Pavet was once a skilled boxer, but after an accident in which he blinded his opponent, he swore never to enter the ring again. Homers' wife, Karen (Deborah Kerr), is beautiful and gentle. Under the temptation of Sergeant Walden (Burt Lancaster), they develop an adulterous relationship. A provocation by Sergeant Johnson (Ernest Borgnine) inadvertently leads to the death of soldier Marco (Frank Sinatra), and in the face of this tragedy, Pavet decides to no longer endure and, filled with rage, he strikes Johnson.
