A young priest confesses his heart to God in his diary. The young priest (played by Claude Laydu) arrives in the village, feeling the cold and isolation of the place. He is filled with enthusiasm, hoping to educate the people and inspire greater piety. However, as he interacts with the villagers, he discovers their superficiality and utilitarian attitudes. Some villagers are unwilling to spend money even on their wives' funerals, and most do not care whether their souls are saved, questioning instead his spirit of dedication. Only one countess, unable to relieve her grief over the loss of her son, seeks out the priest for a long conversation, which brings her some comfort. Yet, in the broader context of the village, he still feels futile; his own confusion and pain even God cannot save him from. After a long period of depression, the priest gradually loses his appetite and ultimately discovers he has stomach cancer, dying alone in loneliness.
