The children have all grown up and started their own families. Father Shūkichi (played by Chishū Ryū) and his wife (played by Chieko Higashiyama) are heading to Tokyo to visit them, starting their journey in a cheerful mood. However, before they even reach their eldest son's home, their grandson starts crying and throwing a tantrum because of their arrival. The elderly couple begins to feel awkward; their eldest son Kōichi (played by Sōichi Umezu) is busy working as a doctor in Tokyo, their second daughter Shige (played by Haruko Sugimura) runs a beauty salon in Tokyo, their second daughter-in-law Noriko (played by Setsuko Hara), and their youngest daughter Kyoko (played by Kyōko Kagawa) lives in Osaka with their third son Keizō.   Tokyo feels unfamiliar to the elderly couple, and they find little joy at their children’s homes. Their eldest son is too busy to take them out. After moving to their daughter’s home, they continue to feel confined and face conflicts daily. The couple gradually understands their children's situations, realizing that their old friends in Tokyo are also not doing well. Only the widowed daughter-in-law Noriko shows great filial piety towards them. Eventually, the elderly couple sets out on their journey back home, taking no more than ten days...
