10-year-old girl Charlie (Brittany Robertson) lives a life of reliance with her terminally ill mother. One day, a man named Mr. Church (Eddie Murphy) knocks on their door, coming to care for the struggling mother and daughter. His tenure is short, only 6 months. However, Mr. Church ends up staying with them for six years, and under his guidance, the aimless Charlie begins to aspire to become a writer. After her mother passes away, Charlie gradually loses contact with Mr. Church and embarks on her own life path. In her second year of college, Charlie discovers that she is pregnant and, in a state of panic, reaches out to Mr. Church by knocking on his door. Mr. Church takes Charlie in and assumes the responsibility of caring for both her and her mother.
