Mai (played by Yasuko Makita) is an ordinary girl born in a remote village. Due to a traumatic childhood experience, Mai's personality is gloomy and introverted. To improve her character, she travels to Tokyo to stay with her aunt Butterfly (played by Michiyo Okusu), who runs a geisha house. Thus, Mai adopts the name Suzume and becomes a geisha apprentice while also attending a local high school to continue her studies. At school, she meets a handsome senior named Kunihiko (played by Masahiro Takashima), but he already has a girlfriend, Kyoko, who is the school's beauty. Mai believes she can never compare to her. Although she receives extensive training as a geisha, Mai's personality does not improve much. Furthermore, her silence and odd behavior make her a target for bullying in her class.
