The story takes place in the late 1960s, where Annie (played by Christine Lahti) and Arthur (played by Judd Hirsch) are radical activists opposing the Vietnam War. In order to uphold their beliefs, the two engage in many extreme actions, ultimately becoming wanted by the authorities for planting bombs in a government laboratory. From then on, Annie and Arthur live a life of hiding and evasion. Danny (played by River Phoenix) is the eldest son of Annie and Arthur. One day, he encounters a girl named Rona (played by Martha Plimpton), whose intelligence and quick wit give her an irresistible charm, and soon Danny falls in love. Rona's presence makes Danny weary of their nomadic lifestyle; he hopes to settle down and have a real "home." However, for his parents, this simple wish could lead to an irreparable tragedy.
