As two pairs of friends who have known each other for over ten years, the peaceful breakup between Sally (Judy Davis) and Jack (Sydney Pollack) leaves Gabe (Woody Allen) and Judy (Mia Farrow) in disbelief. When Sally sees Jack quickly finding a new partner, her initially calm demeanor turns to fury. To soothe her friend's wounded feelings, Judy introduces her colleague Michael (Liam Neeson) to Sally, whose enthusiasm for Sally leaves Judy feeling uneasy. On the other hand, talented student Rain (Juliette Lewis) draws the attention of her teacher Gabe, who, despite wanting to remain loyal in his marriage, feels an irresistible pull toward Rain. Meanwhile, Jack, who is not enjoying his time with his new partner, finds himself longing for his old love, while Sally is happily involved with Michael. These four successful adults in the workplace find their romantic lives in turmoil. Director Woody Allen uses extensive dialogue to explore the beginnings and endings of relationships between couples and between men and women, vividly portraying the emotional and lifestyle states of modern individuals.
