In the Warring States period of Japan, a small mountain village faces a threat from mountain bandits. To protect the autumn harvest, the village elders decide to hire samurai for protection, but the only reward they can offer is three meals of white rice a day. In the city, they are met with disdain and even beaten by the samurai. Until the appearance of Kanbei (played by Shichirō Ōkouchi), who has now become a ronin, after some consideration, he agrees to help. He tells the farmers that at least seven samurai are needed, and then Kyozō (played by Seiji Miyaguchi), Shichirō (played by Ko Kimura), Gorō (played by Yoshio Inaba), Shichirō (played by Daisuke Katō), Heihachi (played by Minoru Chiaki), and Kikuchiyo (played by Toshiro Mifune) join the group, making seven men tasked with defending the village. Throughout the preparation process for defense, there are many frictions and funny incidents between the samurai and the farmers. During a surprise attack, one samurai is shot dead while trying to save a farmer, and soon after, the bandits retaliate, leading to a fierce battle about to begin.
