Young secretary Marion Crane (played by Anne Heche) lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and is in love with a man from California, Sam Loomis (played by Viggo Mortensen). Their path of love is not smooth; Marion dreams of marrying her lover, but Sam must use his income for alimony, making a beautiful marriage seem distant. One day, Marion is tasked by her boss to deposit $400,000 in a bank. Unable to bear the pressure of life, she decides to flee with the money, planning to start a new life with Sam. Marion drives away, but her journey is interrupted by bad weather.
