Shy 16-year-old Ruby Gilman (voiced by Lana Condor) desperately wants to fit into the life at Coastal High School, but she always feels like her classmates see her as invisible. She is tutoring the skater boy she has a crush on (voiced by Bebe Wood) in math, but he seems to admire her only for her academic prowess. Meanwhile, her fiercely protective tiger mom (voiced by Toni Collette) not only forbids her from hanging out with the cool kids at school at the beach but also imposes strict rules that she can never go swimming. The mermaid clan vows to protect the world and all oceans, having fought against the vain and power-hungry mermaid faction throughout history.
