This is a dramatic and well-acted art film, though it has a somewhat somber tone; it won two Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. It tells the story of a hard-drinking famous singer who, with the help of his doctor and wife, manages to pull himself together and make a comeback. The big producer David Selznick originally tailored this good script for his star wife Jennifer Jones, intending to let her experience the taste of being a leading actress. However, just before filming began, Jennifer Jones announced her pregnancy, resulting in a last-minute change of cast, and Kelly unexpectedly seized this opportunity to showcase her acting skills, going to great lengths to transform her striking appearance into that of a disheveled, plain-looking woman to fit the role. In the film, she plays the wife of the unfortunate actor Pinklaus Bay, a timid country girl who tries hard to encourage her husband, while also developing feelings for the young doctor helping him quit drinking, William Holden. This love triangle creates immense inner conflict for her. Coincidentally, in real life, Pinklaus Bay and William Holden are also pursuing Kelly, complicating matters. Perhaps Kelly has blurred the lines between reality and the screen, which adds to her emotional investment, enabling her to surpass many seasoned predecessors at just 26, becoming the youngest Best Actress in Oscar history at the time.
