The first in Guizhi Hong's "Evil" trilogy. In the early years of the Republic of China, the Chen family in Xiguan, Guangzhou had fallen into decline, leaving only Chen Xiuying (Tian Ni), her husband Yang Zhenyu (Wang Rong), who had married into the family, and a maid serving Xiuying. Xiuying was frail and sickly, coughing nonstop with the slightest movement. Zhenyu was a gambler and a drunkard; whenever he encountered misfortunes outside, he would beat Xiuying and the maid. Unable to endure it any longer, the maid left Xiuying behind and returned home. One day, Xiuying was visited by Liang Qihua (Chen Sijia), who claimed to be the daughter of a servant from the Chen family. Seeing Xiuying's frail state, Qihua expressed her willingness to stay and take care of her. Despite Xiuying explaining Zhenyu's bad habits, Qihua remained undeterred, and Xiuying was immensely grateful. Zhenyu offered no special treatment to the new maid, but Qihua was no "good person." One day, she seizes the opportunity to work with Xiuying to kill Zhenyu. From then on, Xiuying fell into panic and was ultimately scared to death by Zhenyu's "ghost." What she did not know until her death was that Qihua was Zhenyu's lover, and neither Zhenyu nor Qihua had anticipated that Xiuying would become an "unrelenting spirit."
