Satsuki's mother is ill and hospitalized, so her father takes her and her four-year-old sister Mei to live in the countryside. They find the environment there very novel and discover many interesting things. They encounter many small spirits, come into their own environment, see many strange things in their world, and even become friends with a large, chubby Totoro. Totoro and the little spirits use their magical powers to bring many wonderful sights to Satsuki and her sister, greatly expanding their horizons.
