In 1986, in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, in a scorching summer, a decomposing female corpse is discovered by the edge of a field. Local detective Park (played by Song Kang-ho) and detective Seo (played by Kim Sang-kyung) from Seoul take on the case, and the only thing confirmed is that the victim had been raped. The severe lack of clues leaves inexperienced detective Park and his partner Detective Cho (played by Kim Roh-weon) to rely on brutal interrogations and intuition, leading them to wrongfully coerce confessions from suspects multiple times. In contrast, Detective Seo remains objective and calm, logically analyzing the situation and ruling out suspects, causing internal conflicts among the police as they strive to prove and overturn contradictions. Despite their efforts, more innocent women fall victim to brutal murders, prompting them to reach a consensus to cooperate. At this point, a young man (played by Park Hae-il) who perfectly fits the profile of the suspect becomes the prime suspect, and the police tighten their grip on him while a DNA test report is sent to the United States; however, the case does not end there.
