The story takes place in the Italian Riviera of the 1980s, where seventeen-year-old Elio (played by Timothée Chalamet) vacations every summer with his family. This year, sharing their holiday time is Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a tall, handsome, and cheerful American who quickly wins over Elio's family. Over time, a deadly attraction develops between Elio and Oliver, but the constraints of gender and age prevent them from taking that critical step. Meanwhile, the pure-hearted girl Marzia (played by Esther Garrel) also offers her affection and body to Elio. Ultimately, overwhelming passion breaks down the barriers between Elio and Oliver, leading to a romance that is doomed to have no outcome.
