By chance, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter) and Margaret (Emma Thompson), two sisters, meet the Wilcox family. Within the Howard's End estate owned by the Wilcox family, Margaret shares a close bond with Mrs. Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), while Helen leaves the Wilcox household after a brief romance with Paul (Joseph Bennett). Before her death, Mrs. Wilcox leaves the entire Howard's End estate to Margaret, a fact that Henry (Anthony Hopkins) conceals as he proposes to Margaret. After leaving Howard's End, Helen meets a man named Baster (Samuel West), and they enjoy a harmonious relationship. When Margaret sees Helen again, she is shocked to discover that the unmarried Helen is pregnant, leading to Helen's rejection and expulsion by Charles (James Wilby), the eldest son of the Wilcox family.
