This is a broken family; the alcoholic coach father, Paddy (Nick Nolte), abuses his wife, and the second son, Tommy (Tom Hardy), leaves with his mother who can no longer bear it. The eldest son, Brendan (Joel Edgerton), chooses to stay for love, believing he can gain his father's favor and support, but in the end, father and son part ways. Years later, Tommy returns to find his father, carrying the painful memory of his mother’s death and his traumatic experiences in the Iraq War. He asks his father to coach him again so he can participate in a high-stakes MMA competition. Almost simultaneously, Brendan, a former professional fighter turned high school physics teacher, is struggling financially and cannot bear his inability to provide for his wife and daughter.
