In an ordinary Asian community in the United States, lives a family of four led by Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh). Over fifty years old, she struggles to run a small laundry store with her timid and inept husband Waymond (Stephanie Hsu). Her father (James Hong) is elderly and needs care; her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is unconventional, rebellious, and temperamental. Life seems hopeless, filled only with pretense and suffering. One day, while reluctantly heading to the tax office to file taxes, Waymond suddenly exhibits unusual behavior. He tells his wife that he comes from another universe and needs Evelyn to unite all versions of herself across the universes to defeat an impending evil force. Initially skeptical, Evelyn soon connects with other versions of herself from different universes. As darkness descends, this unremarkable woman must become the savior of the multiverse...
