This film is adapted from the classic novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, telling the story of Paul Bäumer and his classmates Lär, Müller, who join the German National Volunteer Army and are sent to the front lines to fight against the French army during World War I. On the battlefield, they witness the brutal hunger, bloodshed, and death, as the absurdity and ruthlessness of war lead Paul from infatuation with war to despair.
