The story takes place during the Cold War in 1979, where Gunter (played by David Kross) and Peter (played by Friedrich Mücke) find themselves under the iron-fisted regime of East Germany. Although their movements are restricted, they do not give up their pursuit of freedom. They spend two years planning a remarkable escape. They utilize all available resources to create a massive hot air balloon, intending to lead their families to West Germany in the simplest and most direct way. However, just as they are about to cross the border, the hot air balloon unexpectedly crashes, and their actions attract the attention of the secret police, who quickly launch a manhunt against them. While evading their pursuers, Gunter and Peter must also find a way to build a new hot air balloon, starting a race against time.
