In the seventh year of the Kan'ei era, during the time of Tokugawa shogunate's third shogun Iemitsu, the implementation of centralized power weakened the authority of many feudal lords, leaving many once-prominent samurai unemployed and reduced to ronin. The harsh reality forced these idle ronin to frequently visit the homes of feudal lords, declaring their intention to commit seppuku, and the lords, unable to recruit more ronin due to their weakened power, had no choice but to pay them off, making this a popular form of extortion at the time. One day, a ronin named Chichiyama Noriyuki visited the Ii family, making the same request. The retainers decided to play along and allowed him to commit seppuku, but Chichiyama Noriyuki died biting his tongue in extreme pain. A few months later, an old ronin named Tsukumo Hanshirō (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) came to request to use the Ii family's treasured land for seppuku as well, also due to the unbearable hardships of life. The elder of the Ii family (played by Rentarō Mikuni) intervened. Before committing seppuku, Tsukumo requested to tell the story of his life...
