Steele (Humphrey Bogart) is a screenwriter who, by chance, meets a woman named Mildred (Martha Stewart). That night, Steele invites Mildred to his home to discuss the script, but by the next morning, Mildred is found dead under mysterious circumstances, making Steele the prime suspect. Fortunately, their neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame) provides an eyewitness account that proves Steele's innocence, and the two develop a romantic relationship. However, the gossip surrounding Steele never ceases, and their relationship becomes increasingly strained as Steele grows more volatile, nearly harming Laurel. Ultimately, the real killer of Mildred is apprehended, but Steele and Laurel's relationship can never return to what it was.
