Will Francis (Jude Law) is a renowned architect, but his promising young career doesn't translate to a happy family life. His communication with his wife diminishes as she focuses entirely on their socially withdrawn daughter, leading to a lack of daily interaction within the family. Will’s office is repeatedly burglarized, and in his anger, he begins to investigate the thief, which leads him to meet single mother Amira (Juliette Binoche). The uniquely charming Amira is the thief's mother, and Will finds himself deeply attracted to her. He abandons his pursuit of the burglary case to quietly court Amira. Amira lives in poverty, bearing the responsibility of raising and educating her son alone. Will gradually wins over Amira, and it seems that their lives are about to be rebuilt by this relationship. However, the deconstruction of life is not as simple as Will had envisioned.
