After her father is murdered, 14-year-old Mattie Ross (played by Hailee Steinfeld) arrives at the scene of the crime in Fort Smith to arrange her father's affairs as the eldest daughter. The killer, Tom Chaney, has disappeared, and in this dull and busy Western town, nobody cares when the fugitive who killed an outsider will be caught.
