Wendy (Laura Linney) is a 38-year-old playwright living in New York. Her job barely pays the bills, she is unmarried, and is involved in an inappropriate relationship with a married man, leading to a chaotic life. She has a carefree brother, Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who works as a college professor in Buffalo. He seems to be thriving, but he also has his own troubles—his girlfriend is about to leave him for Eastern Europe, which makes him sad, but he doesn’t try to stop her because he is unwilling to get married. One day, they find out that their father (Philip Bosco) has Alzheimer's disease. After a long time apart, the siblings reunite to place their father in a nursing home and take turns caring for him. Throughout the process filled with troubles and arguments, they recall their father's past authoritarian and irresponsible behavior, reflecting on their current loneliness and rethinking the meaning of "family," as their father's death is inevitably approaching…
