In the winter of 1948, at the second floor of an old Shikumen house located at 23 Renkang Li, Linsen Road, Shanghai. This house originally belonged to newspaper proofreader Kong Youwen (played by Wei Heling), who was occupied by the traitor Hou Yibo (played by Li Tianji) during the Anti-Japanese War, reducing Kong from homeowner to tenant. After the war, Hou transformed into the head of a department at the Nanjing Ministry of Defense, coming to Shanghai every Saturday to "buy and sell". In addition to Kong, there were also small trader Xiao boss (played by Zhao Dan) and teacher Hua Jie (played by Sun Daolin) from Zhongzheng First Middle School, who were tenants here. The three families gathered to discuss but lacked unity, thus seeking their own paths. Hua sought a house at school but turned down the principal's (played by Li Baoluo) temptations, unwilling to betray friends, and soon got arrested due to a teaching boycott. His wife (played by Shangguan Yunzhu) ran around in vain for help and reluctantly sought assistance from Hou, who took the opportunity to seduce her. Kong was unable to find a house to move to. Hou bribed thugs (played by Zhang Zhizhi) to beat and smash them. Xiao borrowed high-interest loans from Hou to "press gold and top the house", getting surrounded and beaten by everyone, and later, when gold prices soared, they lost everything. The three families found themselves at a dead end and finally united to fight against the evil forces.
