A love story drenched in crimson and pristine white, written in a notebook filled with warm yellow pages, narrated over and over by an old man (James Garner). The old lady (Gena Rowlands) always listens quietly, curiously asking about the outcome. In a nursing home, this unchanging scene unfolds every day. On the pages of the notebook, beautiful handwriting documents the love that blossomed that summer. Ally (Rachel McAdams) is the daughter of a wealthy family who comes to the small town for a summer getaway. In a dreamlike amusement park, she meets Noah (Ryan Gosling). Noah may have no money, but he lives happily. With him, Ally learns freedom and finds joy, and the two quickly fall in love. However, they are separated by Ally's parents at the end of summer. As Noah's 365 letters are secretly hidden away, Ally finally gives up waiting after seven years. Just a day before she is to step into the church, she suddenly sees in the newspaper the white house Noah promised to build for her. All memories awaken... Perhaps it is not the characters in the story who should awaken, but the listener.
