The film is part of Rohmer's series "Six Moral Tales." The story follows a 34-year-old Catholic named Jean-Louis (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant) who falls in love with a young female university student. He encounters an old friend, Vitar, (played by Antoine Vitez) who invites him to dinner at the home of a free-spirited divorcee named Maud (played by Françoise Fabian). At the dinner table, the three of them, holding different moral viewpoints, engage in discussions about religion, atheism, love, morality, and the life and philosophical works of Pascal. As the night progresses and heavy snow begins to fall outside, Vitar departs, and Maud persuades Jean-Louis to stay the night. Maud is a master of seduction, doing everything she can to entice him. The conservative and loyal Catholic Jean-Louis finds himself in a dilemma; on one hand, he already has someone he loves, but on the other, the alluring Maud is hard to resist. He somewhat resists, ultimately overcoming the temptation of her beauty. Later, he marries the girl he loves, only to discover she was once Maud's husband's mistress. The film received nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay at the 42nd Academy Awards.
