Black migrant worker Leo inexplicably jumps off a construction site, falling into a coma; nurse Mariana, in an effort to escape her life in Lisbon, voluntarily accompanies Leo back to his hometown – the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde. On this volcanic island, with its constantly erupting lava, she struggles to communicate with the locals due to the language barrier, yet she senses a mysterious force of death and experiences a love that ends without resolution. During Mariana's intimate journey, the scars of colonization, love, and the melancholy of loneliness are implicitly conveyed.
