In the 14th year of Genroku, Asano Naitō (played by Teruhiko Saigō), the lord of the Akō domain, was mocked and insulted by Kira Yoshinaka (played by Nobuo Kaneko) at a public ceremony. In a fit of rage, he drew his sword and injured Kira. Subsequently, Asano was sentenced to commit seppuku for drawing his sword in the imperial court, and the Akō Castle under his rule faced the fate of being transferred. When the news reached Akō, the entire city was in turmoil. The chief retainer, Oishi Kuranosuke (played by Kin'ya Aikawa), worked to stabilize the people's hearts while managing the aftermath. Yet, despite the circumstances, dozens refused to leave. Oishi gathered everyone together and decided to endure the humiliation temporarily, awaiting a suitable opportunity to assassinate Kira and avenge their lord. Thus began their long wait...
