The film "The Idiot" by Makoto Tezuka is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by Japanese literature writer Ango Sakaguchi, a member of the bum literature (also known as the decadent school). He uses irony to depict the devastation of human civilization and the lives of people among the ruins. After the war, Japan, which was struck by the American atomic bomb, lay in ruins, with a desolate landscape and social turmoil, where people struggled to survive. The film begins with a similar scene, reflecting an intrinsic element of Japanese directors, a method that embodies the clamorous national spirit (Japan). This subtle power is worthy of attention from all Asian countries that suffered under Japanese militaristic aggression during World War II! The solo piano faintly echoes amidst cries, as if mourning the scenes of humanity. The black-and-white grainy images exhibit characteristics of news documentaries; this is the beginning of the film, a start that conceals its true purpose. The camera's shutter continuously records such existence—whether it is a historical memory or emotional provocation, only the director truly knows. Sometimes, to escape circumstances, finding solace in illusions is indeed one way of evasion. Makoto Tezuka creates a splendid scene filled with song and dance through dreamy visuals, postmodern techniques, and computer effects, while contrasting shots of ordinary people transfixed by television highlight the insidious nature of this anesthetization of the minds of the impoverished masses. Onstage and offstage, two worlds are destined to coexist; those in the media are also common folks who may have become numb, drifting with alcohol and lust. This is because the times require vulgarity to fool the masses, turning them into a part of the mediocrity, into controlled idiots. They also use illusions to deprive the citizens of the possibility of thoughtful reflection, leaving them unable to awaken in the swamp of desire and greed! Conscience is often constrained by circumstances, preventing people from crying out. There have always been those who awaken in every era; however, awakening comes at a cost, as the wandering singer Yang Bo once said: Have you ever seen an anarchist within the system? This points to a certain fate, where being within it means you can never have your own thoughts!
